Osinbajo, Bakare, declare for 2023 Presidency

Yemi Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has formally declared his intention to run for President in 2023. The Redeemed Christian Church of God pastor, who is also a lawyer, promised to transform the security and intelligence structure of the country if given the opportunity to lead Nigeria.

He said in a video on Monday, “I am today, with utmost humility, formally declaring my intention to run for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the platform of our great party, the All Progressives Congress.

“If by the grace of God and the will of the people, I am given the opportunity, then I believe that first, we must complete what we have started, radically transforming our security and intelligence architecture, completing the reforms of our justice system; focusing on adequate remuneration and welfare of judicial personnel and ensuring justice for all and the observants of the rule of law.

"Rapidly advancing our infrastructure development, especially power, roads, railways, and broadband connectivity, providing an excellent environment for businesses to thrive, taking the agriculture revolution to the next level, especially mechanisation and developing the farm-to-table value chain; making sure that the government, its agencies, and regulators, serve the business community, creating a tech economy that will provide jobs for millions of young Nigerians; enhancing our social investment programme, to a full-scale social welfare program.”

Meanwhile, Tunde Bakare, senior pastor of Citadel Global Community Church has said that he has a vision for a new Nigeria and has the capacity to lead the nation. He made this statement on Saturday at the virtual meeting unveiling Project 16 to Nigerians in Diaspora.

Bakare said that he was the best suitable candidate to handle the challenges bedevilling this country. He also advised Nigerians to rate the capacity of candidates before voting a leader in 2023.

The preacher warned that the South was being set against the North, while Christians were being set against Muslims, ahead of the 2023. However, he said he is still the rallying point to bring back order in the nation.

He said, “The PTB (Pastor Tunde Bakare) brand is a rallying point for all Nigerians. I have a vision of a new Nigeria and I will play a leading role as we approach the Nigeria of our dreams.”

The news of Osinbajo and Bakare's declaration has been greeted with mixed feelings. Some people have said that they want a leader who would restore their hope and build their trust on the nation again.

There have been a series of challenges in the nation since President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office in 2015. Insecurity heightened, food prices skyrocketed, and the economy experienced a downfall. Nevertheless, some people have said that they are hopeful that the new set of leaders will bring back the lost glory of the country.
