Pastor, 3 others killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Benue

Governor Ortom

A pastor and three others were shot by suspected Fulani herdsmen on Tuesday in Benue State, Vanguard reports. Pastor John Ajav of Deeper Life Bible Church was murdered in Waku village, Guma local government area while he was heading for a church program that morning.

Also, three famers were killed in another attack while they were working on their farms in the Nyiev Council Ward area, Guma LGA, the same day.

Tivlumun Nyitse, the chief of staff to Benue governor, Samuel Ortom, a native of the area, confirmed the killings. He wrote on his Facebook page. “We lost Pastor John Torbee Ajav this morning to some Fulani marauders who shot him on his way to Gbajimba to attend a religious function.

“The late John was a pastor with the Deeper Life Bible Church, Umenger. May the Lord receive his soul with mercy.”

The killers reportedly came from neighboring state, Nasarawa. This is another case of insecurity in the middle belt region. In the past, there have been records of Fulani herdsmen attacking the region which has led to many deaths.

The effort of the government to curb the insecurity in the region has not yielded any positive result so far.

Caleb Abah, the Chairman of Guma local government area, was quoted as saying, “These terrorists have continued to attack and kill our people for no reason whatsoever,”

Morning Star reported that on March 17, armed Fulani herdsmen stormed Agunu Dutse village in Kachia County in Kaduna state shortly after midnight. They kidnapped about 46 people.

The people are still calling on the federal government to find a lasting solution to their plight.
