Earthquake: Haiti Gets Help as Death Toll Hits 1,297

On Saturday, Haiti got hit by a great magnitude 7.2 earthquake which injured about 2,800 people. So far, 1,297 persons have died from the disaster. Rescue work is still ongoing as the search for more survivors continues. The earthquake affected houses, schools, and churches. Hospitals have been overwhelmed with the large number of patients. Hence, the country is dire need of medical supplies.

Residents trooped the market on Sunday to buy the available items such as fruits and water. Some of them were appreciative to God for preserving their lives during the earthquake. Consequently, they went to the church in town to pray.

A state of emergency was declared by Prime Minister Ariel Henry for one month for the country.

"The most important thing is to recover as many survivors as possible under the rubble. We have learned that the local hospitals, in particular that of Les Cayes, are overwhelmed with wounded, fractured people," Henry said.

The U.S Geological Survey said the epicenter of the quake was about 78 miles (125 kilometers) west of the capital of Port-au-Prince. The affected families in Les Cayes town have been devastated as they searched through the debris for any tangible material they could savage.

One of the residents, Johanne Dorcely, 58, whose house was affected by the quake said, ‘’We only have Jesus now. If it wasn't for Jesus, I wouldn't be able to be here today."

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, has sent help to the people of Haiti through USAID. The funds will help them to rebuild again. Biden said the United States are a "close and enduring friend to the people of Haiti."

In addition, China, Argentina, and the United Nations are equally assisting with rescue efforts. Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian humanitarian group is equally supporting Haiti with emergency relief equipments such as water filtration units, shelter materials, and airlifting disaster response team members. The group is headed by Franklin Graham.

On Sunday, Pope Francis said prayers for those affected by the earthquake. He encouraged the survivors and assured them of recovery efforts.
