Twitter Ban: Adeboye and Kumuyi Defend Decision to Continue Tweeting

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, and the General Superintendent of the Deeper Life Christian Ministry, Pastor W.F Kumuyi has defended their decision to continue using the social media platform, Twitter, despite the government banning it.

In his tweet, Adeboye said that the church is ‘’domiciled in more than 170 nations and territories." He also backed his decision with a section of the UN universal declaration of Human Rights.

“The Redeemed Christian Church of God is domiciled in more than 170 Nations & Territories. The tweets here are in accordance to Article 19 of the UN universal declaration of Human Rights,” he said.

According to the Foundation of Investigative Journalism, Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights gives everyone the right to express opinion regardless of the medium involved.

“Everyone has the right to freedom and opinion of expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers,” it states.

In addition, Pastor Kumuyi backed Pastor Adeboye’s tweet earlier saying, ‘’In view of the Twitter ban in Nigeria, please note that the content shared on this handle is targeted at a global audience in more than 5 continents and over 100 Nations. And we share from the content from any of these locations.’’

Reactions trail the clerics’ statements
Kunle Agbede commented, ‘’Commendable but not enough, to me. Nigeria is a state party to this charter and the implication of this is that the country is bound by the provisions of the charter. Pastor Adeboye is a world renowned Pastor and should use his platform to call out more the excesses of the government. None of us is free until all of us is free.’’

Emma Nuel said, ‘’Holy rebellion.”

Ojelade Ayodeji Olukorede commented, ‘’Its good. Let clueless rulers use their power now to arrest.’’

Tosin Olugbenga tweeted, ‘’As a member of RCCG too, I’m tweeting under the umbrella of RCCG. The Redeemed Christian Church of God is domiciled in more than 170 Nations and Territories. The tweets here are in accordance to Article 19 of the UN universal declaration of Human Rights. A Global Church!"
