At the 88th Academy Awards which took place on Sunday, February 28, Spotlight won in the Best Picture Category.

Spotlight is a 2015 American biographical crime drama film  about an investigation into cases of widespread and systemic child sex abuse in the Boston area by numerous Roman Catholic priests.
"We would not be here today without the heroic efforts of our reporters," said producer Blye Pagon Faust in her acceptance speech. "Not only did they affect global change, but they absolutely show us the necessity for investigative journalism."

Producer, Michael Sugar, called on Pope Francis to focus on the Vatican's efforts on protecting children. According to Sugar when he came onstage to receive the award, "This film gave a voice to survivors and this Oscar amplifies that voice which we hope will become a choir that will resonate all the way to the Vatican. Pope Francis, it is time to protect the children and restore the faith."

Vatican Radio, the authoritative voice of the Vatican, had earlier praised the film for being "honest and compelling".

Crux, in October last year, reported that the Globe’s reporting, upon which the film is based, helped the Church in the United States “to accept fully the sin, to admit it publicly, and to pay all the consequences.”

The star cast includes Michael Keaton as reporter Walter Robinson, Rachel McAdams as Sacha Pfeiffer and Mark Ruffalo, who was nominated for his role as Globe reporter Mike Rezendes.

The real Spotlight won journalism's top award: the Pulitzer Prize in 2003.

Here is the video trailer of the film.
