Dr James Dobson

Dr. James C. Dobson, one of the most influential Christian voices of the past five decades, passed away on August 21, 2025, at the age of 89. Known as a psychologist, bestselling author, and iconic broadcaster, Dobson dedicated his life to defending biblical values and equipping families to thrive amid cultural change.

Born in 1936 in Shreveport, Louisiana, Dobson’s life mission took shape early. With a keen interest in family dynamics, he pursued psychology and soon established himself as a trusted counselor. In 1977, he founded Focus on the Family, an organization that grew into one of the largest faith-based ministries in the world. His radio broadcasts, filled with practical advice and biblical teaching, eventually aired on more than 4,000 stations across North America and reached audiences in over 160 countries.

Dobson’s influence extended well beyond media. He authored more than 70 books, many of which became household staples in Christian homes. Titles such as The New Dare to Discipline, Bringing Up Boys, and When God Doesn’t Make Sense offered timeless guidance for parents navigating the complexities of raising children and preserving strong marriages. His works consistently blended psychological insights with biblical truth, earning him respect both in the church and among policymakers.

Throughout his career, Dobson served as an advisor to five U.S. presidents and participated in national commissions addressing family and social policy. From combating the rise of pornography to shaping conversations on child welfare, Dobson was never shy about engaging in the public square. His appointments by Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush reflected his stature as a leading advocate for family-centered policy. Later, his presence on President Donald Trump’s Evangelical Advisory Board further demonstrated his enduring influence on national issues.

In 2010, Dobson transitioned from Focus on the Family to launch the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute (JDFI), continuing his ministry through Family Talk, a syndicated radio program still heard by hundreds of thousands each week. This move reflected his unwavering commitment to equipping families with wisdom and biblical perspective, regardless of the shifting cultural landscape.

Colleagues describe him as a man of conviction and compassion. “He was a mentor, a counselor, and a steady voice of truth in turbulent times,” noted Gary Bauer, Senior Vice President of Public Policy at JDFI.

Dobson is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley, their children Danae and Ryan, daughter-in-law Laura, and two grandchildren. His enduring legacy rests in the countless families strengthened through his teaching and the generations inspired to uphold faith and family as cornerstones of life.
