Kumuyi cancels Aba crusade after IPOB’s warning

The planned crusade in Aba, Abia State, has been cancelled by the General Superintendent of the Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor William Kumuyi. He made this decision after a couple of warnings by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) that he should not hold the crusades in the state because of insecurity reasons.

Also, the group had informed the cleric that if he holds the crusade and any anomaly happens, it will be blamed on the group.

The Chairman of the crusade’s organising team, Pastor James Akpofure, confirmed the cancellation of the crusade in a statement on Saturday.

The statement read in part, “As there are currently some security challenges at the intended alpha location (Aba, Abia State, Nigeria), the Global Crusade Convener, Pastor (Dr) W.F. Kumuyi commiserates with our people in Abia State and will be praying along for God’s Divine Intervention."

When the cleric initially announced the crusade in the state, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, issued a statement advising the cleric that he should reconsider his decision.

"Let him (Kumuyi) and the organisers of the crusade make sure that nothing happens. The security of this region is not good because of political and criminal activities. We, therefore, advise him to stop this crusade for security reasons.

“IPOB will not allow anyone to die because of this crusade scheduled to hold in Aba. The probability of criminals operating as unknown gunmen infiltrating the crusade is high and they will blame it on IPOB,” the statement read in part.

Meanwhile, the Christian Association of Nigeria had supported Kumuyi to go ahead with his crusade. Nevertheless, IPOB stood by their word. The 80-year-old cleric later hearkened to the advise of the group.

The crusade, which is now cancelled, was scheduled to hold from May 24 to May 29, 2022.
