Jerry Falwell, Jr., President and Chancellor of Liberty University, proceeds on indefinite leave immediately

Jerry Falwell, Jr., President and Chancellor of Liberty University, has agreed to proceed on indefinite leave immediately. This was at the request of the Executive Committee of Liberty University’s Board of Trustees, acting on behalf of the full Board.

Though the university did not give a reason but it seems that it is connected to a recent photo circulated of Jerry Falwell Jr., posing with a woman at a party with their zippers down and midsections exposed.

Jerry Falwell Jr. became the President and Chancellor of Liberty University upon the death of his father in 2007.

Jerry Prevo, the Chairman of the Liberty University Board of Trustees also added his voice to the Executive Committee saying, "Today, my colleagues and I on the Liberty University Board of Trustees and Jerry mutually agreed that it would be good for him to take an indefinite leave of absence. This was a decision that was not made lightly, and which factored the interests and concerns of everyone in the LU community, including students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, leaders of the Church, as well as the Falwell family."

"To support Jerry through this period, we ask that our entire community lift him up in prayer so he may be able to fulfill God’s purpose for him and for Liberty University."

According to Falwell in a radio interview with WLNI, he said that the woman was his wife's assistant. "You know, it was weird because she's pregnant so she couldn't get her (shorts) up and I was like, trying to like -- I have a pair of jeans I haven't worn in a long time so I couldn't get mine zipped either," Falwell said. "So I just put my belly out like hers."  He said he "should never have put it up and embarrassed her."

"I've apologized to everybody and I promised my kids I'm going to try to be a good boy from here on out." he added.

Prevo said the leave of absence decision "was not made lightly" and took into account "the interests everyone in the LU community, including students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, leaders of the Church, as well as the Falwell family."
