Nigerian British RCCG Pastor and 2 children drown at Spanish holiday resort

Pastor Gabriel Diya
A Nigerian-British pastor of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, UK branch, has drowned while holidaying at a Spanish holiday resort on Christmas Eve. Two of his children also drowned at the same swimming pool at the Costa Del Sol hotel.

The 52 year old pastor, Gabriel Diya and his 16 year-old son, Praise Emmanuel, went into the swimming pool to rescue his 9 year old daughter Comfort Diya, who was having problems in the pool. Unfortunately all three of them drowned in the pool.

Pastor Gabriel Diya was the minister-in-charge at Open Heavens in Charlton, south-east London, which is part of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

According to the Spanish Police, Comfort got into difficulty when she was swimming on one of the 21 swimming pools at the resort. Upon seeing the struggle, her father and older brother jumped in to try to save her but also struggled in the water. Despite poolside attempts to resuscitate them, all three died at the scene.

Unfortunately there was no lifeguard at the poolside when the incident happened.

The resort said in a statement: “The Guardia Civil have carried out a full investigation and gave formal permission to reopen the pool as they found no concerns relating to the pool or procedures in place, which leaves us to believe this was a tragic accident which has left everyone surrounding the incident in shock.”

The pastor is survived by a daughter and a wife who is an assistant pastor at the Open Heavens church.
