"The Birth of a Nation" is 2016 American drama film based on the story of a slave Nat Turner who led slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia, in 1831.
Co-written, co-produced and directed by Nate Parker (in his directorial debut), it stars Parker as Turner, with Armie Hammer, Aja Naomi King, Jackie Earle Haley, Penelope Ann Miller and Gabrielle Union in supporting roles.
The Birth of a Nation is about Nat Turner (Nate Parker), a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer), accepts an offer to use Nat's preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities - against himself and his fellow slaves - Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.
