State government orders arrest of CAN leaders for spreading rumours against Buhari

The state Commissioner for Housing and Urban Planning and spokesman of the Conference of Christians in Kwara State government, Bode Olayemi, said the films were shown in a seminar at St. Barnabas Cathedral Church, Ilorin last week, where some Christians were invited to the event.

Reports say the Kwara State government has ordered the arrest of some leaders of the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for allegedly misleading members of the public and showing inciting films against the ambition of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate in the upcoming general elections , Muhammadu Buhari.

Reports say the state Commissioner for Housing and Urban Planning and spokesman of the Conference of Christians in Kwara State government, Bode Olayemi made the call in Ilorin at a press conference on Tuesday.

According to ThisDay, Olayemi, said the dubious films were shown in a seminar at St. Barnabas Cathedral Church, Ilorin last week, where some Christians were invited to the event.
He said, “We found as a fact and controverted ‎that the dubious seminar on the dastardly acts of Boko Haram in northeastern part of Nigeria was sponsored by a few disgruntled and undesirable elements hiding under the cover of Kwara Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) was allegedly anchored and masterminded by one Dr. Olusola Ajilore, the former state secretary of CAN and his cohorts”

“That the destabilising agents of a section of Kwara CAN deliberately deceived Christian faithful by calling on them to attend a prayer session at St Barnabas ‎Cathedral, which turned out to be an obnoxious theatre for fanning embers of discord among peace loving people of Kwara.

“That these leaders of CAN in the state were obviously sponsored by an opposition party to the popular All Progressives Congress of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed to foment, trouble, create confusion and truncate our nascent democracy,” he added.

Rather than concentrate on prayers for peaceful 2015 elections, the commissioner stressed that, “This Ajilore group allegedly mustered Nigeria’s financial resources to sponsor the seminar by engaging canvassers to go into the electoral wards of Kwara State to the grassroots level and deliberately discredit and misinform the public about the APC presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

“Is Kwara CAN now a political party or an arm of a political party? Where did Kwara CAN raise funds to go into political canvassing at the grassroots instead of missionary works? Definitely, this is from the N7 billion Presidency largesse. Are we to use Nigerian resources to destroy our fellow brothers and sisters?”

“Our colleagues commissioners and other political appointees, who were deceived to attend the seminar had to leave the venue in anger when they‎ saw the turn of events,” he added.

“We implore the security agents such as Commissioner of Police, Director of State Security Service and others to immediately arrest and prosecute individuals that are hiding ‎under the guise of religion to cause disaffection in the polity.”

“We call on Kwarans, irrespective of religious, ethnic and political affiliation to continue to live in peace and harmony as we have always done,” he stressed.
