A prominent member of the Anglican Church, Archbishop Ignatius Kattey, and his wife, Beatrice, were abducted by unknown gunmen around the Aleto Bridge, Eleme in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State on Friday, 6th of September.

Archbishop Kattey is the the Dean of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) and the second in command to the Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh.

He was said to be driving back to Port Harcourt with his wife Beatrice when they were abducted at about 10.30p.m.

A plea for his unconditional release was unanimous among the church’s faithful.

No group has claimed responsibility for this crime and no ransom demand has been made. It however gathered that the police gave the abductors a hot chase and they were forced to abandon Beatrice and the car they were driving in but went away with Kattey, who is also the Archbishop of Niger Delta Province and Bishop of Niger Delta North Diocese.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mrs. Angela Agabe (DSP), confirmed the incident and said it was the hot chase policemen gave the bandits that forced them to abandon the woman.

She said that the State Police Command had intensified efforts to rescue the bishop unhurt and arrest the perpetrators.

“We are on top of the situation. Our men rescued the wife who was kidnapped with him last night. We are combing all the bushes and exploring other means to secure his release,” she said.
