On Tuesday, a one storey church building collapsed at Okpanam, Oshimili North local government area of Delta State, trapping over 50 children. According to reports, the building, which belonged to Salvation Ministries, was having its bible studies service when the incident happened around 5pm affecting majorly the children section of the building.

It was gathered that the 10 years old building was originally constructed as a plaza before the church took the upper part of it. A church member, Grace Ibe, who witnessed the collapse of the building, said it occurred with a thunderous noise.

“We were clapping and praying when suddenly we heard the cracking and the building swallowed the children section with the children,” she said.

Ibe added that the church is presently observing its 21 day fasting and church members came to break the fasting with a communion service. Meanwhile, there have been rescue measures already undertaken at the site of the collapse. Security operatives, fire service, Red Cross officers, and men of the Delta State Emergency Management Agency are already on ground for a rescue mission.

According to witnesses, about 20 children and 15 women have been rescued so far. However, it could be certified if they were alive as they were being taken out for medical treatment. Also, the Secretary to the State Government, Patrick Ukah, has visited the scene of the sad incident.

Consequently, many sympathizers are present as rescue mission is still ongoing.
