Anglican Church Calls For Credible Election

The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion has commended the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) for the pre-election arrangements to ensure a credible election in February.

INEC was commended in a communique issued at the end of the 2015 annual Bishops’ retreat held at Ibru Ecumenical Centre, Agbarha-Otor from the 5th of January to the 10th of January, 2015 presided over by Primate of the Church, Rev. Nicholas D. Okoh.

The Church also advised political office seekers to ensure that the unity of the nation is not put in jeopardy by any reckless action or utterance.

It urged the Federal Government to ensure all categories of election officials and observers are provided a safe and conducive environment to play their various roles without their lives being endangered.

“We call on all leaders to admonish their adherents on the virtues of peace and tolerance as we go into this critical stage in our democratic experience.

“As Christ’s Ambassadors and watchmen over the affairs of human societies, Christian leaders are enjoined to practically contribute to Government policies, intervene in crisis situations, speak out against evil and corruption and defend the rights of all citizens,” the Church stated.

Bishops were reminded of their ordination vows which requires that they be good examples to the flock by their moral and spiritual life-style.

“As Ambassadors of God to the world, they must keep on contending for the faith that was once and for all delivered to the saints and bring the good news of God’s salvation, love, peace and hope to a world troubled by persecution, suffering and insecurity.”
